Ohio State-Notre Dame kick off time, channel introduced

It was confirmed on Monday, as expected, that Ohio State and Michigan’s annual matchup at the end of the 2022 college football regular season will kick off at its traditional 12 pm time and will be broadcast on FOX. On Tuesday, Buckeye fans got more updates on the 2022 schedule.

ESPN announced that the network will broadcast the Scarlet and Gray’s marquee Week 1 home matchup against Notre Dame. That game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET and air on ABC. The Ohio State-Notre Dame will also host ESPN’s Week 1 College GameDay pregame show, bringing the likes of Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Desmond Howard and David Pollack to fans across the country from just outside Ohio Stadium.

Additionally, it was announced that the Week 4 game between the Buckeyes and Wisconsin will be broadcast on ABC. No kick off time was announced for what will be both teams’ Big Ten opener at the Horseshoe.

The Scarlet and Gray’s game against Notre Dame marks the start of a home-and-home series between two of college football’s most historic programs. After playing in Columbus, Ohio in 2022, the two teams will meet again in South Bend, Indiana next year on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Ohio State holds the series record against Notre Dame, going 4-2 versus the Fighting Irish all time, with each of those four wins coming in the previous four meetings. The two programs last met in the regular season in 1996, the second game of another home-and-home series. John Cooper’s Buckeyes defeated Lou Holtz’s Notre Dame 29-16 at Notre Dame Stadium, a year after winning 45-26 at Ohio Stadium.

The first two meetings between the Scarlet and Gray and the Fighting Irish occurred in 1935 and 1936. Elmer F. Layden’s Notre Dame earned back-to-back five-point wins against Francis A. Schmidt’s Ohio State.

Notre Dame comes into this season-opening game after an 11-2 season in 2021. Head coach Brian Kelly departed the program following the regular season for the same role with LSU and the Fighting Irish promoted Marcus Freemana Buckeye linebacker from 2006-08, from defensive coordinator and linebackers coach to head coach.

This offseason, Freeman hired Al Washington, who was not retained as the Scarlet and Gray’s linebacker coach following the 2021 season, as a defensive line coach/defensive run game coordinator. Freeman also hired his former Ohio State linebacker teammate James Laurinaitiswho spent the last several years doing sports radio in Columbus and calling games for the Big Ten Network, in a support role.
